This Week on the HOH

All aboarrrrrd, metal fiends! It’s your weekly BuzzCut from the House of Hair!

He’s got a few of your requests to get to (make your request now), and he’ll also be continuing with a couple of heavy giveaways (Twisted Sister and Saxon).

Pull on the spandex and get that hair so high you impale your ceiling and read on, headbangers!

Rocklahoma!!!

Stay tuned right here for a HUGE Rocklahoma announcement...next week! We're sorry, but we'd be shot by the lawyers if we said anything before all the "i's" were dotted and the "t's" were crossed! And there are 2 "i's" and 3 "t's"...run for your life!

---------------------------------------------------------

Feb 20, 2003

This week is a sad one in metal history. On February 20, 2003, The Station nightclub in West Warwick, RI, burned to the ground taking with it the lives of 100 people and injuring 200. The fire occurred during the first song performed by Great White and was set off by the band’s pyrotechnics, igniting soundproofing foam in the club. It was the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history.

The actual site, which is now an empty lot with memorial crosses (pictured), is expected to be a permanent memorial once all lawsuits stemming from the fire are settled and actually paid. To date, the survivors and family members of those lost have been offered a reported $176 million from various defendants (sponsors, club, foam manufacturer, etc.), which has not yet been collected or distributed.

"There are people who have lost hair, their hands, ears, noses, fingers, arms, their jobs, their homes," says 39-year-old Linda Fisher, who spent three weeks in a drug-induced coma and suffered second- and third-degree burns over one third of her body. "Anyone who was in that building that night, for what they went through, they deserve a million dollars each. The worst injured? There's not enough money to give him." Fisher’s own medical bills since the fire are around half a million dollars; a majority of the money is expected to go toward medical bills, attorney fees and future care for those injured. Payments to individuals are expected to range from $20,000 to several million depending on the severity of their injuries. "It's not winning the Powerball," added Fisher. “We're not going to buy new cars, we're not all going to buy mansions."

Gina Gauvin, a single mother of three who lost her right hand and all the fingers on her left one down to the knuckle, said she plans to use her share to buy a new house for her family. Her injuries have left her permanently disabled, and she's been struggling to make ends meet. "I'll just be happy once I receive my settlement, to be able to not have to worry about asking for help from anybody and being self-supportive," Gauvin said.

Last year, HOH host and Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider helped spearhead (and performed at) a charity concert to benefit the survivors of the fire, many of whom have lifelong medical needs. The Phoenix Rising! concert raised over $300,000, all proceeds of which went directly to meet the immediate medical and daily living needs of those affected. Aside from the money raised, Dee was instrumental in bringing national attention to this cause. Station Family Fund founding member and past President, Todd King, reports that, "Dee's involvement with the Station Family Fund benefit last year was the turning point in our fight to provide aid to these victims. Within months of the show, lawsuits were settling, and promises were being made from entities that we had not expected to settle. Truly, without Dee, we would be in a much different place right now. Our profound thanks go to Dee and to The House of Hair for standing by us!"

It’s important to note that the settlement money is not yet available to the survivors (and may not be until ’10) and their ongoing medical needs are still very urgent. To find out how you can help out, head over to The Station Family Fund’s website.

---------------------------------------------------------

Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx got super pissed off and berated a crying female fan when she threw a water bottle at him while he was talking to the crowd from the stage. Now, throwing crap at anyone on stage is pretty low…the problem here was that it was Nikki’s own water bottle that he had tossed in the audience just moments prior! Here’s a link to the video on TMZ.com (profanity warning!). Once the video of Sixx’s tongue lashing spread like wildfire, he issued an apology on his blog. “The way it happened is, I threw a bottle of water to some fans and didn't realise the very bottle I threw to the fans was thrown back at me. I have to admit, bands get pretty pissed when people throw !@#$ at you onstage. I didn't even think it was the same bottle, so with that being said, I'd like to say I'm sorry to the fan who threw the bottle back at me. These damn cliches seem to be true, like two wrongs don't make a right...rock 'n' roll, and temper tantrums... PS: These self-help books are really helping. Ha-Ha
-----------------------------------------------------------

While we’re on the subject of cool movies, there’s one that caused a huge stir at last month’s Sundance Film Festival and is garnering rave reviews from critics and fans (and we’re already dying to see it). Anvil! The Story of Anvil is the true story of the struggles of Canadian metal band Anvil to hit it big…but failing. Launched in the ‘70s by school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner, the band went on to become “demigods of Canadian metal” and influenced a whole generation of successful bands from Metallica to Motorhead and all points in-between. But Anvil’s career took a different path…straight to obscurity. The film is a hysterical and poignant look at the now fifty-somethings in Anvil and their last-ditch quest for elusive fame and fortune - a real-life This Is Spinal Tap. The film is out in the UK right now and will be hitting independent theaters in the US this spring; check out the cities and dates right here. And, once again, look and listen for an exceptional Anvil promotion on the House of Hair!

Rock on the Range 2009 has announced the lineup for the two-day rock fest this May 16-17th in Columbus, OH. Motley Crue, Slipknot, Alice In Chains, Korn and a ton more are on the bill. Check out the full story (and lineup as of press time)!

He'll also be getting to a pile of requests including ones for Skid Row, Twisted Sister and Motley Crue – were any of ‘em yours? No? Then make your request here....HouseOfHairOnline.com

Read on, crazed metal fiends, and shout it at the next person who looks at you funny: IF IT AIN'T METAL, IT'S CRAP!

Newsflash: Twisted Sister to Headline at Rocklahoma

Band Will Close Down The Final Day Of The Fest
Image
You read that headline right! Twisted Sister has joined the Rocklahoma lineup this year and will once again be closing down the four-day metal concert in the headlining slot on Sunday, July 12th. Talk about putting a giant freakin’ exclamation point at the end of the festival! Here's what our fearless leader had to say:

"In every great religion or society there are pilgrimages to be made and homage to be paid,” says Twisted frontman Dee Snider. “The Islamic have Mecca, the Jews and the Muslims have the Wailing Wall, the Catholics have St. Peter's Basilica, the Irish have the Blarney Stone and so on and so on. The ultimate pilgrimage for the old school metal community is Rocklahoma. Each and every one of us must make the trip and pay homage to the Gods of Metal. Wait a minute....that's me! And that's why I've just got to go back to Rocklahoma this year...'cause there's nothing quite like being paid homage to! It's better than sex!"

In addition to Twisted Sister, who headlined at the first Rocklahoma in ’07, other bands slotted to perform so far are Great White, Kix and Keel, among others, and rumors are flying that some major artists will soon be announced on the bill. It’s barely March, folks, so you know there are some monster huge announcements on the way! The HOH will keep you in the know! July 9th-12th in Pryor, Oklahoma – make your pilgrimage to Rocklahoma!

And hey – you wanna slice of Twisted Sister live? Wanna know what you’re gonna be in for at Rocklahoma? Then enter to win this week’s contest and score yourself a copy of TS’s new CD/DVD release, Live At The Astoria. One grand prize winner will be chosen to take home a signed Epiphone Jay Jay French Les Paul – not bad for firing up your computer and pushing a few buttons! All you’ve gotta do to win the guitar is pick a member of Twisted Sister OTHER than Dee and tell us why they rock your world and blow your mullet in the air. Jay Jay French, Mark “The Animal” Mendoza, A.J. Pero or Eddie Ojeda – pick one and you could be turning that broken air guitar of yours into something real!

Metal News You Can Ooze

They’re like Barbies…only you can’t cut their hair and they cost over a hundred bucks! Rock Iconz is the name of this line of dust collectors limited edition resin sculptures. Ozzy, Ted Nugent, Randy Rhoads…and a bunch more, too.
If you need somewhere to hang your socks to impress someone special with their fave rocker in convenient frozen-in-time form, then these little dudes might be the perfect gift.

Image
-----------------------------------------------------------

High fives to Iron Maiden, who blew Coldplay away and scooped up Best British Live Act at the recent BRIT Awards in London. "This has to be good for metal, I don't think many BRIT Awards have been given to metal so it's about time it was recognised for the creative force it is,” said their manager, Rod Smallwood. “Metal and Maiden have long thrived outside the mainstream media and radio so I am sure our fans will be very pleased about this and, let's face it, they are the ones who voted in droves and the ones we have to thank."
-----------------------------------------------------------

Here are some killer kicks that are a little more…practical. Converse got fans of The Who and Pink Floyd in a tizzy over the announcement and release of the special edition Chuck Taylor shoes featuring the bands, and now comes word that AC/DC and Metallica will also be on a shoe near you. They’ll be available in both low and high top and will be out this fall.
Image
-----------------------------------------------------------
Former Guns N’ Roses and current Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan will be releasing his second full-length studio effort under the moniker Duff McKagan’s Loaded this spring. The album is called Sick and is due out this April 7th, but hey! Why not win one? Wait, who said that?! Stay tuned for next week’s BuzzCut for all the details!

Bay Area thrash metal kings Testament are heading out on tour in support of their ’08 release, The Formation of Damnation. The album was the band’s first new studio effort in nine years and the tour is going to feature the classic lineup of vocalist Chuck Billy, guitarists Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick, bassist Greg Christian and drummer Paul Bostaph. The tour kicks off May 2nd and you can check out the confirmed dates on our HOH website.

Also out on the road this summer is Judas Priest! In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their classic album, British Steel, they’ll be performing the album in its entirety (plus more Priest faves). Priest is playing most of the dates with Whitesnake (no confirmation on exactly which ones yet), but if you’d like to see if they’re coming your way, check out our Bands On Tour page.

On the way: Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful, a book featuring previously unpublished photographs and text by the band members is due out this October. The book will focus on the Bon Jovi band members’ lives on stage, on the road and at home, as well as personal reflections on the highs and lows of their 25 years together.

When Kevin Met Dee...

This is a cool story we wanted to share and it all started with an email from a guy named Eric.

He wrote in to tell Dee how much his close friend Kevin dug his work...he told us about Kevin’s struggles and triumphs being a single parent and of Kevin’s admiration for Dee’s work and lifestyle -- he even has an image of Dee covering his entire lower leg!

Eric was taking Kevin to NYC for some much needed R&R and wanted to know if Dee might take some room in his schedule to meet up (and sign Kevin’s tattoo so he could have the autograph inked permanently – now that’s a fan!)

Dee was blown away by the cool email and met up with Eric and Kevin – here’s a few pics of their meeting.

Metal News You Can Ooze

Here’s a must-see for all metalheads: Anvil! The Story of Anvil. The movie will be released in NY and LA on April 10th and go national soon after that. VH1 will be airing the movie this summer with a DVD to follow. The film follows the true story of the many struggles of Canadian metal band Anvil and their quest to hit it big…but failing. The band was formed in the '70's by school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner. Once known as “demigods of Canadian metal”, they eventually headed straight to obscurity and beyond. The guys are now 50-somethings and this true-to-life Spinal Tap saga is something you’ve gotta see! Keep your eyes peeled for appearances by Slash, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Slayer’s Tom Araya and others. Get more info here.
Image

Metallica will be wrapping up the European leg of their tour this summer and heading back to the States…for more touring! They’ve just announced over two dozen new dates across the U.S. and Canada starting in September and running through mid-December. Are they headed your way? Check out all the dates right here on the HOH website.

Ozzy Osbourne fans…set your TiVos. The Ozzman and his family return to TV this week with the premiere of "Osbournes: Reloaded" on Tuesday, March 31st. The show, which airs on Fox, is a variety-type of format and features Ozzy plus his wife, Sharon, and their kids Jack and Kelly.
Image

A new commercial is set to begin airing this week featuring Gene Simmons (aka “Dr. Love”) of Kiss. Gene will be camping it up for the new soda from Dr Pepper called Dr Pepper Cherry. The ad will be the latest in the soft drink company’s “Trust Me, I’m A Dr” campaign which previously featured Dr. J (Julius Erving) and Dr. Fraser Crane (actor Kelsey Grammer). "When initially describing Dr Pepper Cherry's taste, we felt it had just a kiss of cherry and was so smooth, we knew who our third doctor had to be — Dr. Love," said a company spokesperson. The commercial begins airing on March 30th.

Electric Boys are a staple on the HOH with their song, “All Lips N’ Hips” and you just may be seeing the band live. Singer Conny Bloom has announced the original lineup of the band is back in action and we’re hoping for some new music from the band – maybe this year? We’ll keep ya posted!

Dee's Take on Monster Circus

Twisted Sister frontman and HOH host and fearless leader Dee Snider just wrapped up a string of dates performing as a special guest singer for Monster Circus, a live show currently featured at the Las Vegas Hilton.

The show features a live ringmaster, crazy sideshow acts, dancers and pyrotechnics around a live band. He was barely off stage after his last performance this past weekend when he sent in an update for BuzzCut readers:

What can I say about rockin' with the Monster Circus in Las Vegas that hasn't already been said? It was awesome! What a killer, old school metal experience! Standing on the stage that the King of Rock n' Roll graced (no, not Gene Simmons -- he just thinks he's the king of rock n' roll -- we're talking Elvis, baby!), with the likes of Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne), Fred Coury (Cinderella), Tony Montana (Great White), Bruce Kulick (Kiss) and John Corabi (Motley Crue) was truly a mind blowing experience. And playing the great songs of all of our bands and our personal favorites from even more of the greats was a dream come true.

You see, Monster Circus is finally delivering the music of our generation to Las Vegas. I mean, a lot of us are grown up now (at least physically) and when we go to Vegas to party, we're barraged with the music of every other generation but our own! Elvis, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Streisand, Barry Manilow, Elton John, Cher...I mean, come on! Where's the damn metal?! We're spending our money in that town, paying their bills and it's about freakin' time we got to hear the music we want to party to.

And when you get right down to it, is there really better music for Las Vegas? Think about it: When you say "’80s rock" what comes to mind? Sex, drugs, rock n' roll, booze, girls, cars, partying and rebellion. Now when you say "Las Vegas" what comes to mind? Sex, prescription drugs, rock n' roll, booze, girls, cars, partying...and has there ever been a more rebellious town? Damn, old school metal and Las Vegas is a marriage made in...well, just south of heaven.

And check this out: Apparently I'm the alternative Wayne Newton, because I have been asked to return to Vegas with Monster Circus again next month! Me and the boys raised all kinds of hell these past two weekends and the Hilton Hotel wants us to do it all over again April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25! If you're on the strip, come check us out...and party with us after the show!

For more information go to the Las Vegas Hilton Monster Circus website. Dee Snider and the Monster Circus...we're taking Las Vegas by storm!

Judas Priest is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its classic album British Steel with a tour. For the first time, the band will be performing the album in its entirety when they head out on a series of dates across North America this summer. Get ready for some killer live versions of "Breaking The Law" and "Living After Midnight"! Some of the dates will feature Whitesnake on the bill - get the up-to-the-minute list of tour dates.

Metallica is heading into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this weekend (4/4) and they’re planning a sort of “family reunion,” drummer Lars Ulrich told Billboard.com. "I don't think there's a better time to come together than when it's about celebration," said Ulrich. “I think everybody is proud of their association (with Metallica), so we're reaching out to everybody who's been a part of this, both inside the band and on the periphery of the band over the years.” He added that on the guest list are key figures from the band’s prior record labels (Megaforce and Elektra Records) as well as journalists and musician friends and, of course, former band mates. Guitarist Dave Mustaine was invited but couldn’t attend, as were former bassist Ron McGovney and Jason Newsted, who will be there (Newsted will actually be joining the band to perform during the ceremony). The late Cliff Burton will be represented by his father, Ray. If you wanna check out the induction ceremony online, you can do so at Fuse TV starting Saturday evening at 9 ET.

Twisted Sister frontman and HOH host Dee Snider needs your support! Dee’s asking fans and listeners to sponsor him in the upcoming 7th Annual Bikers for Babies benefit on May 17th. Says Dee, “If you're reading this, you obviously care, like I do, about those who are too small to help themselves. As the father of two prematurely born children (Cody and Cheyenne), I know first hand about the difficulties of childbirth and the myriad of things that can go wrong. Fortunately, both of them had no ongoing health problems. Many other families aren't as lucky.

By working with the March of Dimes Bikers for Babies in their fight against premature birth and birth defects for the past decade, I have been able to help those who aren't as fortunate and raise awareness of these families and children's plight. Please consider sponsoring me on my Bikers for Babies mission. Any amount--honestly no matter how small--will help.

When you visit the Grand Canyon, the guides ask that you not throw rocks into the canyon. Why? Because if everyone who visits threw in just one rock....it would be filled! Now imagine if everyone who visits this site donated just one dollar...well, you do the math.

I promise you it's easy to do, and in these economic trying times, the babies need our help more than ever. Thanks for even considering making a donation to this important cause.

And, we'd be remiss if we didn't congratulate Poison leader Bret Michaels on his new Rock of Love, Taya Parker. Taya is this year's Penthouse Pet of the Year (gee what a surprise!) and an exotic dancer. See if the relationship has legs (pun intended) this Sunday, April 19th, when VH1 will air The Rock of Love Reunion.

Re: House of Hair Buzzcut News

This week on the HOH....5-15-09

Heavy Metal Meets The Big Top: Win a Trip to Vegas for Monster Circus!

The House of Hair wants to send you and a guest to the Las Vegas Hilton to catch Monster Circus…and all you’ve gotta do is tippy tap on that gunky keyboard of yours and enter to win! Dee Snider is taking a guest turn at the mic of this crazy heavy metal big top near the Strip, and he’s joined by a killer lineup of all-stars from metal bands you know and love.

Monster Circus HAS to be seen to be believed...so that's why you need to go live and in person! Roundtrip airfare for two to Las Vegas, a one-bedroom suite at the Las Vegas Hilton, dinner at the world’s largest Benihana, tickets to the show (with stage seats, no less!), and a meet and greet with the band could all be yours.

Says Dee about Monster Circus, “And when you get right down to it, is there really better music for Las Vegas? Think about it. When you say “’80s rock” what comes to mind? Sex, drugs, rock n’ roll, booze, girls, cars, partying and rebellion. Now when you say “Las Vegas” what comes to mind? Sex, prescription drugs, rock n’ roll, booze, girls, cars, partying…and has there ever been a more rebellious town? Damn, old school metal and Las Vegas is a marriage made in…well, just south of heaven.”

Enter to win our Monster Circus contest now

Also heading out on tour is Testament…and they want you to choose what you hear! A poll is being conducted on the band’s MySpace page. Fans have three set lists they can vote on, and each city’s set list will be open to voting! "We know times are tough, and it is hard to get out there and spend the money on a ticket, so we are making this tour YOURS,” says singer Chuck Billy. “It is your choice what we play. Check out the BRAND NEW contest live on our MySpace and VOTE on three set lists to determine our musical fate for the evening. We promise whichever set wins, we will get out on stage every night and kick your motha-f*@king ass.”
