Re: Random questions about ROA?
Chris,
We're so honored to have you as a member of our little forum here.
I've got a question. Should we expect any big changes to be made during the move to Broadway?
Rock On, Christina

Re: Random questions about ROA?
The honor is mine!
I don't think there will be anything too huge.
Upon watching with an audience, there were things in the show that I realized could be a little better, clearer, funnier... So I took this opportunity to focus on those details as I rewrite for the transfer. There are some structural shifts... little things. But I think they are things that will make for a cleaner story.
For those that have seen the show a bunch of times, they will notice some changes (hopefully they will like them).
Some of the changes also happen to be things that we wanted at New World but couldn't implement because of time or money or both. Kristin, Kelly, Ethan, Dave, and I got together and compiled a wish list of things we wanted for the new show and some of that will make it's way to The Brooks
If we can execute what we've been brainstorming about the past few weeks, I will be very excited. It's a very talented group I get to work with over here!

Re: Random questions about ROA?
The decision to serve alcohol to people in their seats has been one of the most talked about topics on many theatre message boards I visit. Theres talk about the idea scaring people away, some people being too drunk, how do you check IDs, is it mood setting, and so on. What are your thoughts on the issue?
Do you think this show will bring people to Broadway who would not otherwise think to attend theatre? How is the show reaching out to 80s music fans beyond the theatre crowd?

Re: Random questions about ROA?
Well, personally I think there are two sides to the Alcohol policy at our show. 1) I think being able to drink during the show is a fun element to the experience. Lots of people love it. It makes it feel like a rock event and that is good. 2) I think it's just a matter of execution. I think everyone agrees that moving to a Broadway house requires more attention to anything that could be disruptive. (drunks, loud waiters and waitresses, etc)
We have talked about coming up with a plan so that people can drink, have fun, and still not feel distracted from the show. That is our goal at the Brooks. As far as people who act like drunken idiots, there are two things we are planning. One, is more monitoring of the drink intake of guests (like a bar would do) and two, I plan on writing something (in the sarcastic spirit of the show) for the opening announcement that shames people into acting like adults and not drunken retards during the show
As for you other question, I do think ROA has the capability to bring certain people who may not come to a broadway show into the experience.. mainly because it is silly, fun, and basically a mixed tape of rock live on stage. When I wrote the show my goal was to write a show for people who love musical theater AND people who hate it. As a straight male who has loved musicals since I was a child, I know too well how many people don't like musical theater... pretty much all of my guy friends growing up. So in a lot of ways for me this show is for them. I would love nothing more if ROA could be some sort of "training wheels" for non-theater folk to get interested in broadway. What an honor that would be!
I think the real key with bringing "theater people" and "rock people" to the show and creating something that they both will enjoy is to just make sure that it is clear in the execution that I have love and respect for both worlds. That is my personal goal... as a rock nerd from small town Michigan and as the guy who can recite every line from "Into The Woods."

Re: Random questions about ROA?
I remember seeing the ROA reading in NYC last March I believe it was, and Stacee Jaxx seemed a much different character. What prompted the change?

thats interesting, I assumed it was a directors choice. Will definitely got all the laughs but he was riding a very fine line between eccentric and gay.
